Takayama Restaurant Bar

(02) 6456 1133 Shop 19/2 Snowy River Ave, Jindabyne NSW 2627

Inspired by the bustling Izakaya restaurants found all over Japan, owners Stefan and Ralph Doyle decided to open a Japanese Restaurant and bar of their own. Located in the middle of Jindabyne, Takayama Restaurant Bar is an Izakaya-style restaurant that serves small plates of food to accompany alcoholic beverages. It’s like the tapas of Japan.

Since 2015, Stefan and Ralph have been perfecting the menu at Takayama to offer Japanese favorites and some tasty Australian additions. The name Takayama comes from the Japanese words, ‘tall mountain’. This seems fitting considering Jindabyne is the welcoming point for visitors heading to climb Mt Koszciusko, Australias highest mountain.

Eat!

The best way to order your meal at Takayama is to order many small plates to share. To start, a bowl of warm edamame will get your taste buds ready for the 7 or 8 different entrees. Before easing into the larger plates, try the scallop kushiyaki (fried scallop on a skewer) or the salmon sashimi. For a local twist, the trout sushi rolls are the perfect blend of Japan meets The Snowy Mountains.

For larger plates, the Katsu Curry (deep fried pork or chicken cutlet with curry) and Tonkatsu (Deep fried pork or chicken cutlet with rice and broccolini) will help fill any deep-fried cravings. Takayama also serves a Hokkaido stye ramen with all the trimmings. Not to mention, the steak tataki that melts in your mouth. It could almost be a dessert.

The menu offers Japanese staples like miso soup, chicken karage, and rice bowls. Also, a small dessert offering that includes green tea ice cream.

Drink

The drinks menu features a huge drink list with local wine, Sapporo Draft Beer on tap, and a large variety of Japanese Whiskey. And if a whiskey neat doesn’t suit your palate, try the famous whiskey sour. Assuming you prefer something sweeter, the Mountain Lychee Martini will get your taste buds tingling. Finally, if you’re on a first date or celebrating a birthday, order a shot of shochu to cheers the evening.

Takayama Restaurant Bar is the only place to get your Japanese fix in Jindabyne. They offer bar seating and large tables for up to 12 people. Keep an eye on their Facebook page and book online here.
