Jindabyne is a small town located in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. Nestled next to the Kosciuszko National Park, Jindabyne boasts stunning natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. Jindabyne’s Early History

Jindabyne is located in the traditional land of the Ngarigo people, an indigenous group who have lived in the region for thousands of years. The Ngarigo have a rich cultural heritage, including a complex system of social organization, spiritual beliefs, and artistic expression. European settlement of the region began in the early 19th century, with the first explorers arriving in the 1830s. 

Despite the disruption caused by European settlement, the Ngarigo people continue to play an important role in the community of Jindabyne and the broader region. Many places in the area are significant sites for the Ngarigo people – For example, Curiosity Rocks. These declarations must continue in the future, pressure must be placed on local councils and representatives to continue these actions as the connection of Aboriginal people to the land and culture is inextricably linked to their wellbeing and future.

Jindabyne’s Development and Growth

In the 1960s, the town of Jindabyne, New South Wales was relocated to its current location due to the construction of the Jindabyne Dam on the Snowy River. The dam was part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, a massive hydroelectric and irrigation project that aimed to harness the power of the Snowy River and its tributaries. As part of the Scheme, the town of Jindabyne was moved to higher ground to avoid being flooded by the newly created Lake Jindabyne. The relocation of the town was a major undertaking that involved the construction of new roads, utilities, and public buildings. Despite the challenges of moving an entire town, the relocation of Jindabyne has allowed the town to thrive and grow in its new location.

Since the European establishment, Jindabyne has undergone significant development and growth. The construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme was a major catalyst for this growth, encouraging a huge amount of workers and their families to flock to the region. In the decades following the completion of the Scheme, Jindabyne became a hub for tourism and outdoor recreation. The town is located in close proximity to the best ski resorts in Australia, making it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Thredbo, Perisher and Charlottes Pass are all accessible from Jindabyne, making the town a great base for skiers and snowboarders. 

In addition to tourism, Jindabyne has also been shaped by industries such as forestry and agriculture. The surrounding region is home to a number of national parks and forests, which allow opportunities for logging and wood processing. Agriculture has also added to the local economy, with many farms and orchards located in the area.
